On a related and intriguing side note to my essay on Cultural Production, etc. My trustee research assistant told me that a dancer friend of his moved to nyc 7 years ago and tried to get an artist membership to MoMA. and they told her they only give artist memberships to visual artists, photographers, and film makers. performing artists were not eligible. so we decided to test out the policy, now that MoMA is so supportive and gung-ho for dance!! On Monday my trustee research assistant emailed them the following message:

“Hi, I have a question regarding eligibility for the Artist Membership. I am a practicing dance artist. My own choreography has recently been presented at various important New York City dance venues. I have documentation (publicity postcards, press reviews) from each of these shows. Am I eligible for the Artist Membership at the MoMA? Your website says “Only artists whose discipline is represented in the collection are eligible”. So I’m curious if I’m eligible. Separately, I’m wondering if the dancers who work with me would be eligible for Artist Membership? They have not presented their own choreography, but are certainly creative artists in my work (and they all work with other choreographers as well). Would they be eligible? Thanks in advance for any clarification you can provide!”

They wrote back the next morning;
“Dear [redacted],

Thank you for your e-mail. In order to apply for the Artist membership, we need to see proof that you have performed in a gallery. This also applies to your dancers. Please let us know if you have any questions regarding memberships. Thank you!

    Of course …

    One wonders if the gallery performance has to be authenticated. Can’t have people running around claiming willy-nilly to be artists! It will be chaos!
