December Bulletin Board

What are you doing this month? What are you seeing, reading, dreaming, adoring, rolling your eyes about, snoring through? Want to offer fellow P-Clubbers a discount to a show? Shamelessly plug something you’re in? Pull out your soapbox and hold forth on whatever unbelievably awful or divine thing you just saw? Here’s the place to tell us. And, readers, please note that items on the Bulletin Board aren’t sanctioned or curated by Claudia, or anyone else for that matter.

Have at.

I’m excited for the final performances by the Merce Cunningham Dance Company at the Park Avenue Armory. Since it’s an “Event” by the company, the audience is allowed to walk around. This makes it a terrific dance for the family. I’m bringing both my kids. :)

am currently in Reid Farrington’s latest multimedia extravaganza ‘A Christmas Carol’ at Abrons Arts Center. it’s a wild ride, mashing up 35 different films of the classic holiday tale with 3 live performers and I think works for both lovers and haters of Dickens & A Christmas Carol.

am also (obviously) looking forward to PS122′s COIL fest in January — 11 shows from around the world spread across 8 venues in NYC — mad hot performance times ahead!

We’re doing our first in a series of December and January ‘open meetings’ (what normal people call open rehearsals) for City Council Meeting the project I’m working on with Mallory Catlett and Jim Findlay, on December 21 at 7PM at University Settlement. We need fresh audience members who don’t know much about the piece to come participate. It’s really fun, and you can even just sit and watch. Email me if you want to get a spot. We’ll have a more formal showing later, and the piece opens next year.

I’d love to offer comps to any P-Clubbers who would like to come check out a performance of The Assassins Chase Pinocchio January 6-8 during APAP. The show is Immediate Medium’s first go at bringing the aesthetics and approach of the experimental/multimedia world to a much younger audiences, but it’s an interesting ride for all ages. Shoot me an email at max [at] immediatemedium [dot] org if you would like to attend. More info at

I’ve been enjoying “Girl Walk All Day,” in which the endearingly goofy Anne Marsen rebels against her ballet teacher, steals the cheesy pastel jacket that has become this film’s trademark, and proceeds to dance unabashedly around New York City to the music of Girl Talk (while inspiring me to dance unabashedly around my living room). I saw the whole thing screened a couple of weeks ago; it’s being released online in chapters:

Despite some criticism from my competitive breakdancer friend (along the lines of, “Who does this girl think she is? There are way better dancers out there…”), I frankly can’t get enough, especially of Chapter 3, where she gets really slow and serious to Foxy Brown/Peter Gabriel in City Hall Park. Thoughts, anyone?

I keep an online cultural calendar for New York of things I think are interesting and that I want to see. I started one in Arizona for my students, and the NYC one is for when I’m in the city. Let me know if you think I am missing something!
